Magnetic and electronic specific-heat measurements show that the s electrons of Be are not transferred to the d band in Fe–Be solid solution, but that this transfer occurs in the FeBe2–FeBe5 range at a rate of 0.6 electrons per Be atom while 1.4 electrons of Be remain in s state. This behavior is interpreted in supposing that the free-electron density of iron ns=0.9 has to be increased near ns=1.4 by the solute electrons before s→d transfer can occur. This model applies qualitatively to the observed data of Fe–Al and Fe–Si solid solutions.
