Studies involving the role of oral contraceptive use in the etiology of benign and malignant liver tumors are reviewed. The evidence from these studies strongly suggests that there is a relationship between the use of oral contraceptives and liver tumors. The actual risk appears related to duration of usage and may also be related to the type of contraceptive steroid used. Further investigation is required determine the oncogenic potential of oral contraceptives and the malignant potential of benign tumors.
