Long-wavelength optical phonons have been studied in single crystals of RuS 2 and RuSe 2 by Raman scattering measurement at room temperature. Three Raman-active phonon modes out of the five expected from group theory were observed for both compounds. They are assigned to E g ,A g and T g modes by an analysis based on scattering intensity tensors. The fact that two other peaks are missing in the Raman spectra is attributed to an intrinsically low scattering efficiency or to overdamping by free carriers. A comparison of Raman and infrared frequencies shows that the corresponding metal-chalcogen bonds and chalcogen-chalcogen bonds have nearly the same strengths in RuS 2 , RuSe 2 , and FeS 2 .
