STEPWISE, multiple linear regression analysis estab-lished that a crop water stress index (CWSI) derived from mid-day radiant leaf temperatures, air tempera-tures, and vapor pressure deficits was the most impor-tant independent variable in predicting the xylem pres-sure potential of cotton leaves. When the CWSI was combined with the age of the crop and the evaporative demand of the atmosphere, the water potential of cotton could be predicted throughout the entire growing season. This permits day by day monitoring of cotton plant water status which could facilitate the irrigation decision mak-ing progress without resorting to tedious physiological plant measurements.
