Combined pullout angiography and washout thrombectomy (which virtually always reveals thrombus formation on catheters used for angiocardiography) showed no thrombus formation on those heparinized by the method of Ericksson et al. in a study of 26 patients undergoing angiocardiography. Such catheters may thus be regarded as safe as far as thrombus formation is concerned. It should be observed that the use of heparinized catheters may require a slightly longer compression time because of the lack of thrombotic material which otherwise is stripped off on withdrawal of the catheter thus helping to plug the hole in the vessel wall.
