We present the first observation of optical amplification around ∼ 1 μm taking place in carbon tetrachloride solution of Nd 3+ doped crystal nanoparticle synthesized with solvo-thermal route. Excited with a fiber-coupled 808-nm laser diode, Nd 3+ :NaYF 4 nanoparticle dispersed solution exhibited strong near-infrared emission by the 4 F 3/2 – 4 I 11/2 transition of Nd 3+ ions. Optical gain (0.13 dB/cm) around 1064 nm in the solution has been observed with the pump power of 2.1 W. The decrease of optical gain under intense pumping is not observed.
