Experimental study reveals reduced bus capacitance in AC-DC pulsed load converters via harmonic injection, indicating improved power density.
Regarding the problems of difficult pulse load power suppression, large bus capacitance, and high total harmonic distortion of input current (THDi) in single‐phase ac‐dc pulsed load power converters, a third and fifth harmonic injection control strategy is proposed in this article. Initially, the operating principle of the single‐phase ac‐dc converter and input current harmonics are analyzed. Then, based on the correlation between the bus capacitor and output power, a third and fifth harmonic injection control strategy for the Boost PFC converter is proposed to reduce the difference between the input and output power. In addition, the minimum required bus capacitor under different control strategies is calculated and compared. Finally, a prototype with the output peak power of 1000 W, the output constant power of 150 W, and the pulse repetition frequency (PRF) of 100–500 Hz is fabricated and tested to verify the validity of the proposed control strategy. Compared with average current mode control (ACMC) strategy, the proposed scheme results in a 14%–34% reduction in bus capacitance.
