Theoretical analysis reveals that general relativity describes geometric effects without identifying physical mechanisms, highlighting the need for underlying substrate dynamics.
What this paper argues is that GR, for all its precision, is a description without a mechanism. It tells you what spacetime geometry does with extraordinary fidelity. It does not tell you what spacetime is, what causes its geometry to change in the presence of mass, or what physically happens to a clock when it runs slow near a black hole. The usual response to these questions, “spacetime is curved, and curvature is what gravity is”, is a restatement, not an answer. It is equivalent to explaining fire by saying “fire is hot.” Correct. Not yet a mechanism. This work is part of a larger collection of UST documents. The other versions available in the DOI record are not revisions of this document. They are separate papers written for different purposes. Some versions present the full mathematical proofs behind the update rules, others provide a technical physical description of substrate behavior, and others are formal proof papers built around the Universal Balance Laws. Together, these documents form a complete set: a plain‑language booklet, a physical description paper, and full mathematical proof papers, each offering a different perspective on the same underlying theory.
