Theoretical analysis reveals black holes as fully compressed quiet zones without physical singularities, suggesting a medium-based alternative to general relativity at extreme cosmic scales.
Standard physics describes black holes as regions of spacetime where density becomes infinite, the metric breaks down, and the math produces a singularity. This paper argues that the singularity is not a discovery, it is a symptom of a model pushed past its domain. In its place, this paper presents a substrate-based framework in which the universe operates through a physical medium called the substrate, and every physical phenomenon, mass, gravity, light, particles, is a behavior of that medium. Mass is substrate compression. Gravity is a compression gradient. A black hole is a region where the substrate reaches maximum compression, designated UBL = 1, producing a fully-quiet zone in which no field propagation is possible. The event horizon is precisely the last spherical shell where electromagnetic shear can still exist; inside it, the substrate is too compressed to support any wave or signal. This framework provides concrete, mechanistic explanations for Hawking radiation (boundary tension leakage), black hole growth (compression absorption), merger ringdown (quiet zone boundary oscillation), and the information paradox (boundary gradient encoding). It also connects black holes to cosmology: a black hole's interior is a small-scale recapitulation of the pre-Big Bang state. The paper concludes with specific, testable predictions that distinguish this framework from standard general relativity at the extremes. This work is part of a larger collection of UST documents. The other versions available in the DOI record are not revisions of this document. They are separate papers written for different purposes. Some versions present the full mathematical proofs behind the update rules, others provide a technical physical description of substrate behavior, and others are formal proof papers built around the Universal Balance Laws. Together, these documents form a complete set: a plain‑language booklet, a physical description paper, and full mathematical proof papers, each offering a different perspective on the same underlying theory.
