The eye lens has a gradient of refractive index which varies widely, between species, in its shape and magnitude. Interspecies differences in lens shape have also been found. Based on a study of five species, shape and refractive index are shown to be related; more spherical lenses have a greater magnitude and range of refractive index values. The optical properties of lenses may be related to the visual requirements of the animal. (C h EXp Optom 1993; 76: 1: 22–25)
