Radiation chemistry and the mechanism of the reactions produced by ionizing radiations is extremely complicated. The radiobiologist, however, is concerned only with the effect of ionizing radiations on aqueous solutions more or less saturated with oxygen. Nor is he interested in effects produced by ionizing radiations of a dose beyond 100,000 r, because, in most cases, lethal effects are produced by doses 100 times lower. I will, therefore, confine my remarks to reactions of biological interest produced by ionizing radiations of moderate intensity and in aqueous solutions.
