Excitation of diborane by an ArF exciplex laser induces a chain reaction with deuterium. A mechanism is proposed and computer modeling is applied to simulate experimental results. Rate constants are obtained for the reactions The problem of the primary photochemical step is discussed thoroughly and BH3, not B2H5⋅ , is found to be most probably the reactive intermediate.
