This term was proposed in 1984 (2) by Weström, Evaldson, Holmes, van der Meijden, Rylander, and Fredriksson. The fact that micro-organisms are involved in this syndrome and that no inflammatory reaction can be identified has caused objections to the use of the term 'non-specific vaginitis', the syndrome being neither 'non-specific' nor an 'itis'. Numerous attempts to rephrase the syndrome have been presented but, so far, none has been generally accepted. We would like to suggest use of the term BACTERIAL VAGINOSIS, defined as follows:...References1. Sobel J. Bacterial vaginosis: an ecologic mystery. Ann Intern Med. 1989;111:551-553.
