The oxidation of a 75 : 25 at. % silver-gold alloy in nitric acid provides an interesting system for the study of the effect of a surface film on the microplasticity of a metal. The examination of thin films of the oxidized and then deformed alloy by transmission electron microscopy reveals ‘deformation fringes’ which are interpreted as Bragg diffraction contours of the elastic strain in the oxide caused by plastic deformation by slip in the underlying alloy. The elastic deformation of the oxide can be analysed in considerable detail from a knowledge of the crystallography and epitaxial relationship for the oxide and alloy.
