A new absorption band in uranium doped and undoped BaF 2 after reactor irradiation at 20 K has been observed at 778 nm. From the studies of the optical conversion by 632.8 nm light from He-Ne laser and the polarization measurements, it is proposed that the 778 nm band can be attributed to the F 2 centers in BaF 2 .
