Congenital syphilis is a rare but definite cause of the nephrotic syndrome. The lesion has not been previously reported in patients with the acute form of the disease and only recently has been demonstrated in patients with acquired syphilis. Renal alterations demonstrated by open kidney biopsy in a patient with congenital syphilis and the nephrotic syndrome were compatible with those seen in patients with membranous glomerulonephritis and in patients with the acquired form of the disease.
