An inexpensive, portable incubator can be constructed with a battery-powered thermostat, fan, and resistor as a warming mechanism, with cooling provided by a frozen bag of artificial ice. Temperature control is adequate to allow a variety of insects, including Lygus hesperus Knight and Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris), to be tested directly in the field for insecticide susceptibility. The bioassay is a contact procedure with pretreated glass vials which is suitable for a wide range of insects if vial caps, provision of food material in the vials, length of the bioassay test, and criteria of death are varied depending upon the species.
