The method of assessing the production of stream benthos proposed by Hynes and Coleman gives large underestimates. The modification of this method proposed by Hamilton gives estimates that are strongly dependent on the number of samples and the patterns of growth of the species. The method using differences between successive samples suggested in this paper is relatively independent of the details of sample number, specific growth patterns, and proportions of species growing to different sizes.
