The quantity and the composition of the surface compounds which are obtained as a result of powerful, microsecond pulsed TEA CO 2 laser irradiation in technical nitrogen was analysed in conjunction with the final characteristics of the irradiated surface. A model is proposed to describe the evolution of the interaction process in this case and improvements are suggested in order to develop an appropriate laser plasmatron for metallic surface nitridation.
