A low-frequency transducer in the form of an ’’octagonal ring’’ 10 in. in diameter and 6 in. high, driven by 16 rare earth Terfenol D (Tb0.3Dy0.7Fe2) rods, has been developed. The transducer resonates in a circumferential expansion mode at 775 Hz with a mechanical Q of 2.4. and an effective electromechanical coupling coefficient of 0.4. Results are presented for the transducer operated with and without a polarizing bias up to acoustic output powers of 80 and 350 W, respectively.
