A low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope (LT-STM) has been constructed to study the microscopic properties of superconductors. It has atomic resolution from room temperature to 4.2 K. Conductance spectra obtained between a Pt tip and a NbN thin film agreed well with theoretical curves based on the BCS (Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer) theory. This indicates that STM actually has the potential for probing the microscopic properties of superconductors.
