Experimental study demonstrates enhanced gamma-ray attenuation and wider band gaps in barium-doped glasses, indicating potential for transparent radiation shielding.
The glasses with the formula 77Li 2 B 4 O 7 -11SiO 2 -(12 -x ) MgO- x BaO, where ( \:0≤\:\: x \:≥\:12 mol %) have been fabricated using the conventional melting procedure. The integration of Ba in the glasses increased the glass density, refractive index, and decreases the molar volume. The optical measurement of the current glasses shows transparency of the glasses slightly increases as BaO is added to the glasses matrix. The values of band gap increase from 2.62 to 2.94 eV, with increasing in BaO content, whereas Urbach energy decreases from 0.397 to 0.371 eV. The shielding parameters were estimated. It can be established that Ba12 is a superior \:γ\: and neutron attenuator compared to the other glass samples. This is additional reinforced by the fact that Ba12 has the highest ( \:ρ\: ) among the current glasses. Adjusting the content of BaO instead of MgO provided an effective approach for improving the radiation protective of the present samples. Accordingly, the addition of BaO makes the prepared glasses promising for use in optoelectronic, \:γ\: , and neutron attenuator applications.
