The effect of elastic anisotropy on acoustoelectric domain propagation in semiconducting CdS has been studied by Brillouin scattering. Two configurations were examined. In the longitudinal configuration (E ∥ c) V-shaped domains with the two branches containing different acoustic wave vector distributions were observed. As the domain propagates, the domain tilt angle (θD) changes and saturates at an angle corresponding to the angle of energy propagation (θE) for the off-axis modes of maximum gain. Spatial splitting of the localized flux into two domains propagating near the surfaces has been observed. In the 45° configuration (angle between E and c 45°) angular focusing of energy is obtained experimentally, and phonon packets of quasi-longitudinal modes have been discovered upon reflection of the domain from the anode.
