The dynamical critical behavior of sodium nitrite near the normal-incommensurate phase transition has been studied by means of the high-resolution neutron spin-echo technique. The incommensurate transition in NaNO₂ is characterized by slow relaxational processes rather than soft-phonon modes. Our neutron spin-echo measurements have shown that the pretransitional fluctuations are well described by a single relaxation time {τ}(q) which diverges at the critical wave vector q_δ on approaching the incommensurate transition. Good agreement is found with ultrasonic-attenuation and dielectric-relaxation results.
