Summary. Hypotonically treated spermatozoa take up l-[14C]carnitine, and release it only by a highly temperature-dependent exchange with external l-carnitine, acetyl-l-carnitine or deoxycarnitine (4-trimethyl-aminobutyrate). The exchange system is probably mitochondrial.
