SUMMARYStress was determined in pulse plated gold deposits from a cyanide type bath. It was found that shifts in orientation and grain size accompanied the differences in measured stress. Stresses in pulse-plated films with dual (111)—(200) orientations were compared to D.C. plated films with (111) orientation. The pulse-plated gold exhibited a shift from tensile to compressive stress with increasing thickness, whereas the D.C. plated films were always tensile. Volume expansion and contraction were suggested to be the operative stress mechanisms in the pulsed films.
