Particulate powders and particle morphologies produced by spray drying are discussed, along with factors that affect powder quality, e.g. process conditions, and particle properties. Structural categories of spray‐dried particles are demonstrated and related to various drying mechanisms. The methods of studying particle morphology are also outlined with particular reference to the single droplet drying method, reportedly analogous to industrial spray drying and possibly other particulate formation processes. The advantages and disadvantages of the method are discussed and the importance of particle morphology to powder technology emphasised.
