It is now possible to obtain high quality records of geomagnetic secular variations in the direction (though not the magnitude) of the ancient field. Type-curves are presented for four regions, namely North America, West Europe, Argentina and Australia constructed, by fitting cubic splines to data stacked from numbers of cores of post-glacial sediments. Ways in which the results can be used to investigate the grosser properties of the ancient field are discussed.
