Updates prostaglandin roles in hemostasis; leaves open targeted therapies for platelet disorders.
SummaryMany studies have been performed in the area of prostaglandin research and since 1976 some important discoveries have been made. The general characteristics of prostaglandins, their nomenclature, chemical structure and biosynthesis are reviewed with special emphasis on the biotransformation of arachidonic acid and the role of its unstable metabolites in haemostasis and thrombogenesis. The role of some prostaglandins in some platelet disorders is discussed as well as the possible action of certain drugs which affect enzymes involved in prostaglandin formation.
