The generally accepted method for disease treatment and control is the addition of therapeutic agents to the diet or the water within the culture system. If agents are to be added to a recirculating unit it is necessary to have a knowledge of the effect of these agents upon the nitrifying bacteria. A rapid and simple method has been developed to screen therapeutic agents to determine their short term effects upon nitrification. The results of testing a group of commonly accepted therapeutic agents are listed. The procedure will show the feasibility of using various agents in conjunction with nitrification in a recirculating system.
