On some surfaces, preferential growth takes place at the step edges, because these act as heterogeneous nucleation sites for adatoms to come together. In this paper, we present a one-dimensional theory for the steady-state kinetics of step flow, under conditions of both growth and evaporation, explicitly taking this growth mechanism into account. The growth properties such as step velocities are examined as a function of external flux and terrace width. {} 1996 The American Physical Society.
