We present tectonic reconstructions and accompanying animation of deformation the North America–Pacific plate since 36 Ma. Intraplate deformation southwestern North America was through synthesis of kinematic (amount, timing, and direction of displacement) three main transects the northern (40°N), central (36°N– 37°N), and southern (34°N) portions of the and Range province. We combined transects with first-order plate boundary from the San Andreas fault other areas west of the Basin and . Extension and strike-slip deformation all areas were sequentially restored 2 m.y. (0–18 Ma) to 6 m.y. (18–36 Ma) intervals using a script written for the program. Regions where the kinematics known constrain adjacent areas the kinematics are not well defined. process of sequential restoration highlighted , overlaps, or large in each incremental step, particularly the areas between data transects, which problematic. Hence, the value of the lies primarily in highlighting that might not otherwise be , and thus they should be viewed as a tool for investigation than as a product. new sequential reconstructions show compatible slip along the entire northsouth of the inland right-lateral zone from the Gulf of California to northern Walker Lane is supported by data and that the east limit of active has migrated westward with respect North America since ca. 10 Ma. reconstructions also highlight new regarding strain-compatible extension and west of the Sierra Nevada– Valley block and strain-compatible between southern Arizona and Mexican Basin and Range. Our results ~235 km of extension oriented ~N78°W in both the northern (50% extension) central (200% extension) parts of Basin and Range. Following the initiation east-west to southwest-northeast extension 15–25 Ma (depending on longitude), significant portion of right-lateral associated with the growing Pacific– America transform jumped into the at 10–12 Ma, totaling ~100 km N25°W, for an average of ~1 cm/yr since that time.
