The alignment of liquid crystals on monolayers assembled on ultra-thin gold substrates is demonstrated. Gold substrates with a high transparency can be produced and the liquid crystal alignment can be tuned (see Figure) by the appropriate selection of the thiols and gold deposition conditions. Twisted nematic electro-optical cells equipped with these alignment layers exhibit excellent switching voltages and switching kinetics.
