The current review discusses experiments related to the investigation of the structure and dynamics of chemically immobilized ligands. It covers chronologically approximately fifteen years beginning with the development of early static models (e.g., the bristle concept) and continues to recent experiments involving spectroscopic studies of the motional aspects of the bonded chromatographic surface. The simple static models which were useful as first steps are now yielding to more complex views of the dynamics of the surface. Much of this work has been made possible by the synergistic advantages of multi-faceted approaches involving several techniques.
