Oxygenated, stationary phase cultures of the yeasts Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Schizosaccharomyces pombe emit weak luminescence, most of which lies at wavelengths longer than 450 nm. Anaerobic cultures emit no detectable luminescence. The blue‐green component of the emission was attributed to excited carbonyl groups and the more intense red component was attributed to excited singlet 02‐02 dimers, both species arising from the decomposition of lipid peroxides. The higher ratio of blue:red emission in S. pombe compared with S. cerevisiae was attributed to the higher proportion of unsaturated lipids in the former yeast.
