Reviews the spatial light modulators and their applications to optical signal processing. Different technologies currently under study are presented as well as an analysis of the main characteristics required for parallel image processing and computing. The spatial resolution, the response time and the operating conditions of these devices are compared. The principle types detailed are the following: electro-optic SLM; photoconductor-liquid crystal, and photoconductor-deformable mirror.
