The coordination of aluminum ions in tricalcium aluminate (3CaO·Al 2 O 3 ) was examined using infrared absorption, X‐ray emission spectroscopy, and molar refraction techniques. Each of these methods indicated the presence of aluminum in fourfold coordination. No evidence was found for aluminum in sixfold coordination. The isomorphous substitution of Sr 2+ for Ca 2+ and Ga 3+ for Al 3+ and a comparison between the absorption frequencies for an SiO 4 group and an AlO 4 group were used to identify the infrared absorption bands in tricalcium aluminate.
