Interproximal carious lesions in posterior teeth were diagnosed clinically and from radiographs in 100 persons constituting a random sample of 35 year old citizens of Oslo. Interproximal radiographs revealed 79.5% of the carious surfaces, compared to 21.9% diagnosed clinically, with 33.0% identified on panoramic radiographs. It is recommended that a clinical investigation be supplemented with posterior interproximal radiographs. Panoramic radiographic surveys are not appropriate for caries diagnosis.
