Light of wavelength 360nm is sufficient to form hydroxyl radicals from the bis(hydroperoxide) 1 (R = CH2CH(OMe)OOH). Thus 1 is an attractive photo-Fenton reagent for biological applications. First experiments showed that 1 can cut doublestranded DNA selectively at the 5′ site of 5′-GG-3′ sequences.
