The linearized solutions to the equations of motion for a hot-wire filament are examined to determine the conditions under which vibrations will occur in broad-band turbulence. The vibrations which are caused by the fluctuating aerodynamic loads on the wire may introduce significant errors in turbulence measurements. The behaviour of the filament being deliberately shaken in a steady stream is also examined experimentally and theoretically. An analogue computer experiment is performed to investigate the effect of the turbulence spectrum band-width on the nonlinear characteristics of the filament vibration.
