In a wide range of microbial populations, flower longevity of untreated stems of Dianthus caryophyllus L. was not different from the sterile water control. However, pretreating stems with 1000 ppm AgNO 3 for 30 minutes and placing them in various dilutions of bacterial suspensions extended flower life and greatly reduced bacterial counts in the holding solution. Passing these suspensions through Millipore filters (0.45 μ m) resulted in filtrates devoid of microorganisms which also reduced flower life and increased the water deficit of the petals. Silver counteracted the damaging effects of these filtrates.
