The ratios of the squares of the X-ray structure factors of the [330]–[411] and [442]–[600] reflections were measured in transmission on a vanadium single crystal using Mo Kα radiation. For the first pair the measured ratio was 1·017 ± 00·1; for the second pair 1·04 ± 0·02. The anisotropy of the vanadium metal charge density is therefore confirmed. The validity of the procedure for obtaining the 3d-orbital population from the measured charge anisotropy is discussed.
