WHILE many accounts of the food of brown trout (Salmo trutta L.) during the spring and summer months exist, the food during the winter period is less well known, the principal source of the records having been trout caught by anglers during the fishing season. An opportunity having arisen for the study of the food during the winter, the following account refers principally to that period and is offered as a continuation of the work of Pentelow (1) who has given a systematic account of material from the Rivers Tees and Itchen, collected during March to September, and who reviews the literature of the subject.
