The L, M, and S plaque-type variants of Mengo virus have been found to exhibit distinctive absorbance–temperature profiles, the temperatures at the midpoint of the hyperchromic change being 66, 60, and 65 °C, respectively. A comparison of the absorbance–temperature behaviors of whole virus and phenol-extracted viral RNA indicates that the latter has a highly compact conformation within the virus particle. L-Mengo was shown to differ markedly from the other two variants with respect to (a) rate of sedimentation in dextran sulfate density gradients, and (b) total/infectious particle ratio. A correlation of these physical properties with some of the biological properties of the Mengo variants is presented.
