Aprocedure for optimal modification of a regional potentiometric surface designed solely on the basis of quantitative considerations, is presented. The modification in the potentiometric surface is necessary to incorporate groundwater quality criteria in a critical sub-system of the entire region. The resulting optimal regional potentiometric surface ensures: sustained groundwater yields from the aquifer, compliance with water quality constraints at critical cells of the sub-system (which are identified by a solute transport simulation model), and the most economic conjunctive management of surface and groundwater.
