The amounts of carbon monoxide evolved durin g analytical absorptions of oxygen by alkaline py rogallol were stud ied wi th r e p ect to the composition and methods of preparing solutions, t h e temperature of r eaction , the rate of fl ow of t he sample thr ough the solution, t he capacity of t he reage nt for t he absorp tion of oxygen , the partial pressure of reacting oxyge n, and the manner of b ringing th e gas into contact wi th the reagent. Less t han 0.02 percent of car bon monoxid e was formed durin g analyses of gases containing as much as 80 percent of oxyge n when t he recommen ded solutions were used in bubbler-type absorpt ion pipettes, a nd when the samples were passed into t he solu tio ns at a rate greater t han 20 millili te rs pCI' minu te at a bout 25 C. This was t ru c until thc solu t ions had absorbed approximately twelve times th eir volume of oxygen, after which t he formation of carbon monox ide increased signifi cantly. The N BS colorimetri c carbon monoxide indicating gel was used for the quantitative determinations of carb on m onoxide. A method ,yas developed for preparing pyrogallol solu t ions t hat y ield ed rep roducible amounts of car bo n m onoxide so s mall that no sig nifi cant error was caused in t he usual analysis.
