A calculation of the linear electro-optical coefficient in NH 4 Cl is given which is in qualitative agreement with the observed value. The calculation includes the effects of both the ammonium and the chloride ions, and the chloride ion is found to make a significant contribution to the coefficient of the opposite sign to that of the ammonium ion.
