Damage to one or the other meniscus is, indeed, a common injury of the knee joint. It may seemingly be a puzzling injury to diagnose and treat, one that requires a good deal of technical ability. The purpose of this paper is to help solve some of the problems involved in clearly differentiating and effectively managing the meniscus injury. Menisci A brief discussion of the anatomy of each meniscus (Fig. 1) may clarify some of the problems in diagnosis and treatment. The medial meniscus is situated on top of the tibia on the medial plateau. This meniscus is roughly “C” shaped and follows closely the line of the medial margin of the upper end of the tibia. Its anterior end does not penetrate deeply into the knee joint but attaches to the nonarticular portion of the top of the tibia, in front of the anterior cruciate ligament attachment.…
