The retarded interaction of two identical molecules, one excited, is cut off at long distances R by a decay factor exp (─γR/c), γ-1 being the excitation lifetime. The existence of the cut-off, first postulated by Stephen (1964), is shown to follow from quantum electrodynamics in the damping approximation.
