The domains of nematic liquid crystals begin to oscillate coherently at a certain threshold voltage in a DC electric field. The structures of the hydrodynamic motion and the molecular alignment of this oscillation are investigated and its mechanism is explained. The oscillation is attributed to the time-dependent competition between the hydrodynamic instability and the elastic stability in a non-equilibrium system. Some features of the oscillation are discussed on the basis of this mechanism.
